I, have a nephew

said nephew decided to poke one of my expansion slots in. I tried to pullit o and it falls into my case. So now I haveto retreive it right?

My room has carpet in it but I have a large box I can set it onwhile working on it. No fans or vets on either sideand won't turn Pc on, just need to retrieve a removable HDD slot cover thing.

Can I do it

Thank you!

now if you'll excuse me I gotta entertain sad nephew before he destroys my room again lol

some types of cardboard can have a thin layer of plastic film on it, this would be bad, since it can store/conduct static electricity
if its just plain good old cardboard, there should be no problem
but, it technically wouldnt matter if the pc is on the cardboard if you/your feet, is still placed on the carpet while working, since you would be the conduit
both you and the PC needs to be "off" the carpet, but yea "normal" cardboard should work fine, just remember to ground yourself before you starting working on it to make sure to discharge any static already in you
Card board is non conductive.

So if you place the system case on it or a motherboard, it wont be damaged.

However it`s more about the charge you actually build up in your body.
For example if you have a nylon pair of socks and scuff them on the carpet a charge will slowly build up in your body.

The good news is as long as you leave the cord from the pc`s tower connected to the mains socket with the switch off at the socket and touch any part of the metal case any charge in your body will be taken away because the cord to the wall socket is earthed and any current is drawn to earth, so any charge in your body would be discharged.
