I have a friend who has an old i3-2120 @3.3 GHz, and wants to upgrade. While I was suggesting him to rather build a new one, he argued that he should put in an entry level GPU. Can putting something like GTX 1050 or 1050ti with that ancient relic run titles like FIFA 17 and 18? I don't think so, what's your take?

Yes, it will run it. It won't be 60 FPS/high detail amazing, but it will be playable.

A GPU can always be carried on to another build.

Minimum Specifications FIFA 17.
OS: Windows 7/8.1/10 - 64-Bit.
CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 @ 3.1GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 3.4 GHz.
RAM: 8GB.
Hard Drive Space Required: 50.0 GB.
Minimum Supported Video Cards: NVIDIA GTX 460 or AMD Radeon R7 260.
CPU performance has been largely stagnant since Sandy Bridge, being "ancient" doesn't mean anything anymore and that old i3 will still be suitable for many current games. If you look up the minimum system recommendation for FIFA18, the i3-2120 is slightly better than the minimum's i3-2100.

It may not be the smoothest and greatest experience but it should still work.

Cool GIF BTW.

Upgrading the GPU would definitely help gain some performance but the end of the road is in sight for the I3. For mid/entry tiers, some of the I5's can still give I7's a run for the money when gaming. If he's not already getting CPU bottleneck, then its probably around the corner. If he's really strapped for cash the TI would be a good idea to hold on for another year or so, otherwise a new build would be a better long term investment.
