I sincerely apologize for not being able to come up with an acceptable title.
I have some questions, but here's the problem first-
My (Dell) laptop charger's cord completely gave out on me last night. And my laptop's battery died. Woohoo.
There was a short in the wire for a while (the part that connects the laptop to the adapter, [Is there an actual word for that?] about an inch or two from the connector tip. The rest is completely fine), but it was still usable when held in the right position. But now it doesn't work at all. I would usually be okay with waiting it out until I can buy a new one, but there are some files on there that I need for school and I won't be able to buy a new one for a few days.
I have access to another laptop (Toshiba), whose owner is fine with me using it and it's charger is just fine. And it fits into my laptop. I would use it temporarily until I can get my hands on a new one, but I'm afraid of damaging something because of differences in the adapters.
The input is the same: 100-240V~1.5A, 50-60Hz
but the output is slightly different. Mine has 19V - 3.16A, and the other one has 19V - 3.42A
I know this probably isn't a very big deal, but I don't want to fry anything.
So would it be okay to use the other laptop's charger on mine?
Also (This is a rather stupid question, but I can't find the answer), is it possible to unplug that part of the cord (the part that connects the laptop to the adapter, as stated before) from the adapter? In every picture I see, that's the only part actually plugged into the adapter. The rest is bundled off to the side.
And if you can unplug it, could I use my own adapter and power cord, but use the other charger's (adapter-to-laptop)cable? Or is that just plain ridiculous?
I plan to buy a new charger soon, I'd just like a temporary fix until I can.
