can laptop support 5g

can I update/upgrade my Toshiba satellite C855D-S5205 to accept 5ghz instead of just 2.4?
We have a 5g router but our laptops are only capable of 2.4. Will an adapter solve the problem?

If you disable (usually, from BIOS) built-in WiFi adapter, then external USB one will take over.

BTW - unless you live in an apartment complex with dozens of WiFi networks around you, there won't be much difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
