This motherboard was used in a few HP Pavilion Desktop Models. It has performed well and supports hardware raid from boot so its been very cheap to upgrade it with the times.

The specs say it will support i7 CPU's all the way up to extreme CPUs (including 990x).
I figure when they wrote this up on HP's website, they were targeting the average consumer.

My question is:

Is there any reason it shouldn't run a Xeon? The latest Xeon 1366 CPU is almost identical to the 990x in terms of specs, except the Xeon has a couple more features it supports like enhanced security for example.

Solution
I am assuming that PC was never sold with a Xeon (very likely) so its possible that the system may be missing the Microcode to be able to use the Xeon. However, it may not need it to work, and the Xeon at the time was very close to the 990x.

What is it specifically you want about the Xeon? Generally the matching Xeon to the 990x (i forget the exact model) is a lower clock speed and I don't know how you can utilize a lot of the Xeon features in a home environment.

Its a much cheaper alternative to a 990x with enhanced features, higher operating temp, and lower power consumption.

Are you looking at the Xeon w3690?

Other than support for ECC ram and slightly faster ram options they are basically the same chip:

There are 1 or 2 additional features you would never use. But the 990x can be overclocked, the Xeon cannot.

I would say its highly likely it will work, being that it is so close to the 990x. However I can't find anyone thats done it.

X5675

compare that one to the 990x

Didn't we just have this discussion?

Its slower than the 990x, but otherwise basically comparable. The extra features are meaningless to you, they are all related to using it in a server.

The problem for you is the microcode issue. The W3690 will have a better chance of working, its cheaper than the i7 and basically the same. I can't find anywhere that someone got a X5675 working in that board. Its a risk, but then again you could probably sell it for whatever you pay for it.

Yes, you convinced me that using 2 Xeons would be mostly a waste. But if I can get 1 Xeon that costs 1/3 the price and is almost as good I'm still considering that. I am tempted to get both and try them now that you said nobody has done it.

If it works, you won, if it doesn't you could probably put it right back up on ebay for the same price, so I can't see a lose in this situation.
