Simply put, as the title says. I have a 144hz monitor, currently running it via DVI-D and I'm only capable of outputting 60hz @ 1080p, or I can do 120 @ 1024x768. There's no option to force a refresh rate/resolution via my driver, any change in resolution results in it being stretched across my screen which is unusable, so I need it at 1080p.

So, since I don't have a DP output on my gpu, would an mDP to DP adapter be capable of outputting 144hz? or would I need an active mDP to DVI adapter, or are both fine?

Thanks. gpu is an XFX R7950 Double Dissipation edition, in case anyone's wondering btw.

Solution
First I'll ask, is the DVI dual link? you said dvi D but I just want to be sure, because I've never had that issue with any of my cards not pushing 144 through dvid. As for mini dp to DVI or mini dp to DP. I'd go for the mini dp to DP cable. I had one (have one somewhere) and it ran 144hz.

Solution
It's definitely DVI-D (dual link) - the cable came with my monitor, along with a DP cable, the latter of which I've unfortunately had to discard. I guess that means that either the cable is faulty, the GPU is faulty, or the drivers are just buggy pieces of trash (I'd be willing to bet on the latter).

I'll try and pick up an mDP -> DP adapter then I guess, but out of interest what GPU are you using to output 144hz successfully through DVI-D? Purely asking in case my issue turns out to be something other than an incorrect connection type, and it turns out to be a hardware and/or firmware fault instead.

Currently I'm using a 295x2, In the past year give or take I have done it successfully with a r9 290, r9 290x, and a gtx 970. Never had a issue with it not being able to display 144hz. However I HAVE had issues where DP wont. I'd suggest buying from a place with a simple no questions asked return policy in case it doesn't work.

Sorry to continue to pressure you with questions, but which version of Catalyst are you using/were you using when you managed to successfully select the refresh rate? I have 13.1 atm, I believe the latest for my card is 14.12. Would it be worth me updating, or are there any notable input lag problems with the newer drivers?

No worries man, sorry it took me so long. The new drivers are great. I'm on the current, not at my PC right bow so I'm not sure the number but I think its 14.12. The omega drivers. Absolutely download them. The only thing driver related I avoid anymore with AMD is the beta. The official releases have gotten a lot better.

sorry my reply took so long too. 😀
yeah I downloaded the Omega drivers shortly after my last post, there seems to actually be less input lag and there's also the option to select things to do with GPU scaling now, which I couldn't do before. haven't tried that though since it's not really a priority for me. Anyway the problem with not getting 120hz still remains - I guess I'll try the mDP to DP adapter, and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll think about replacing the GPU entirely.

Just wanted to say that I managed to get everything working, thankyou!

An mDP -> DP adapter (I got it from Overclockers UK, who also sent me free haribo) is allowing me to run 1080p @ 120/144 Hz and I can fully select everything I want to via the AMD Catalyst Control Center. I guess the DL DVI cable I had must have been faulty. Thanks for your recommendation, I hope someone else who's in a similar situation may see this and hopefully find the solution they're looking for. 144 Hz, even for desktop use, is fantastic, and in some games I play (quake live was the best example of this) it's literally night and day, not even exaggerating. I've tested it with my BenQ XL2420Z and Iiyama GB2488HSU-B1, both working perfectly, the Iiyama in particular is a dream.

Thanks once again for your help, much appreciated!

Glad you got it worked out :) Yeah I love 144hz, Everything is so much smoother.
