Can motherboards both support Nvidia and AMD GPU's?

I know that you can't use AMD and Nvidia cards on the same build. But I saw some motherboards that can support CrossfireX without mentioning anything about SLI support, does this mean that I can't use an Nvidia GPU on that specific board? Because they didn't mention anything about SLI support. PLEASE ANSWER ASAP!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Any board that supports SLI should support crossfire, but not necessarily vice versa. SLI requires at least a PCIe x8 connection to each GPU, while I believe crossfire only requires x4. This means that for Intel mobos, only Z series boards ever support SLI (but not all Z series boards do).

is this a money saving problem for the board manufacterer? are the boards cheaper? seems to me the x-16 x-8 x-4connectivity would be backwards compatible by now.

It's more a decision by Intel. They only allow the 16 PCIe lanes from the CPU to be split between multiple slots on Z series motherboards. And PCIe lanes from the chipset can only be up to x4 for a single connection. So there's no way to get at least two x8 connections on a non Z series mobo.
