The 750(non custom design) uses 55w and you gt 610 uses 29w(if non custom design)
Your cpu uses 65w so the combination of cpu and new gpu will be 120watts.So that leaves you 180w for other components.
You should give us some more detailed info about your pc.There are free apps like speccy(and others) which can give info about your pc.Although I would recommend getting a new psu.I would suggest you to get a new 80+bronze(or better) 400w or more psu.I know there are some cheap like 40 dollars 700w power supplies but they are NOT to be trusted, get a good one. Many people only care about the watts their supply can offer and nothing else. That is how they fry their PC's.

A new Power supply and GPU will cost much more

The other components should use about 80w(maybe a bit less or more, this is based on what most other similar components would use).In the worst case you should have at least 50w(more or less, assuming you psu is 300w) before hitting the limit. So go on ahead and change the graphics card. Also please tell us your results. As always we dont have any responsibility if something goes wrong, just saying.

knowing the exact model and the specs of the said 300w power supply would be nice.... that said...

yes it will work fine. should you? thats debateable. is it unsafe? potentially, id give it a 1 out of 10000 chance something bad happens like fire, factoring in a worst case scenerio where this computer has been very heavily used for the past 4 years and the power supply is really crappy quality.

thing is here, that pentium e5500 is going to bottleneck the gtx750 somewhat anyways so the 750 will never ever reach its peak constant power.

you should just look to get an entire new system
