Hey guys so I have an opportunity to pick up either a 5900x or a 5950x. Currently I run a Noctua U12s with a second fan for push/pull on a 3700x and it works great. I have a high airflow case. It’s a Montech Air X ARGB. It has two 200mm fans with mesh front panel, and one 140mm rear fan. I also run two Noctua 140mms for top exhaust. I’m not an overclocker. Just doing mild gaming and video editing. But I will want the multicore performance to dive deep in editing. Currently use Davinci Resolve.

It’s keeps the 3700x pretty damn cool. Idle temp is 34C most of the time.
I got the U12s because the form factor and ram clearance is excellent, and I could easily add the second fan without making the build too cluttered. I’d love to be able to keep it and not find another cooling solution if possible. I’ve been patiently waiting for Noctua to release the U12a in chromax but I’m just wondering if my current set up can handle it for now.

I think it should cool a 5900x very well but 5950x I’m not sure of.

I also think it should handle the 5950X especially if you aren't planing any overclocking. Maybe if you plan to do huge renderings you could run into thermal throttling, but you will never break the CPU with this cooler if these are your worries. The R9 will decrease its clock speed if the temps get near 90°C.
What you could do is to run Cinebench R20 when you get your 5950X and see how the temperatures behave. If they do not even get to 85°C I would stick also in the future with the U12s.
