Can my motherboard boot of pcie?

I'm getting a xp941 m.2 ssd.
My motherboard is an Asus z97-a.
It has a m.2 slot, but that runs at x2, so I want to buy an m.2 adapter, so it can run at x4.
My question is if I will be able to boot from that.

Thanks!

The CPU offers 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes intended for graphics cards. But the chipset offers another 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes for other uses, such as an M.2 PCIe drive.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2

"For example, M.2 modules with two notches in B and M positions use up to two PCI Express lanes and provide broader compatibility at the same time, while M.2 modules with only one notch in the M position use up to four PCI Express lanes; both examples also support SATA storage devices."

So 2 lanes is enough. But they need to match the M.2 module that you have - 1 or 2 notches.
