So currently I have a single core Pentium 4 2.8ghz with 2 threads and it is holding back my PC a lot. I have a Nvidia 9800GT with I believe a half gig of memory, and a 4GB DDR2 ram, but i am on 32bit W7. So I do have some hope right? I know i really need to upgrade the motherboard to take this old hunk of junk anywhere but I found this CPU (the Pentium G630) and was wondering if I could use it on my motherboard. I feel that any upgrade to the CPU would help a lot. Do keep in mind I am wanting to run games like Gary's Mod, Dragon Age: Origins, Counter Strike etc at 60fps.

This is what I'm working with:

Manufacturer Dell Inc.

Any help much appreciated!

Solution
Unfortunately, no. Your socket is an old LGA 478. The G630 requires a newer 1155 socket. You're pretty much stuck with a single core processor as long as you have that board.

Yeah I tried looking and couldn't find anything 🙁 so are you saying that even if I do upgrade there's a chance it might not even work? I'm basically better off buying a new mobo

That is exactly correct. New MB and new processor, with new memory then too.

That's the way I'd go, Dell likes to play and set rigs up so people basically need to come to them for upgrades, i.e. have seen systems where you had to go through them for DRAM because they swould set the BIOS to take an oddball tRC timing so they want say $120 for a pair of $50 sticks

You have Optiplex GX280 - very old PC.

Make sure to upgrade BIOS to the latest version prior installation.

Those are very old processors, are you sure you want one of them?
