Hello,

I've read somewhere that old monitors can cause FPS drops, I use 2 Monitors and I was thinking of upgrading one of them (The main one that i use for gaming), but I've got few questions:

  • If I Upgrade 1 monitor, how would it work with an older one?
  • Does it affect FPS at all?
  • Do I need a new monitor with my current pc build setup as I'm still on 60Hz or is it fine to skip?
My Monitors:

  1. LG Electronics M227WA - https://www.lg.com/ph/monitors/lg-M227WA-monitor (60 Hz)
  2. LG Electronics LG IPS FULLHD - https://www.lg.com/africa/monitors/lg-22MP55HQ-P (60Hz)
M227WA (1920x1080@59Hz)
LG IPS FULLHD (1920x1080@60Hz)

My Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-10700 (Comet Lake-S, Q0)2900 MHz (29.00x100.0) @ 4587 MHz (46.00x99.7)
Graphics: Zotac RTX 3070 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, 8191 MB GDDR6 SDRAM
Motherboard: GIGABYTE H410M S2H
BIOS: F3, 08/28/2020
Memory: 32768 MBytes @ 1196 MHz, 17-17-17-39

- 16384 MB PC19200 DDR4 SDRAM - Kingston KHX3200C16D4/16GX
Drive: Patriot P210 1TB, 1000.2 GB, Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 18363.1256 (1909/November 2019 Update)

Currently the LG M227WA is using RGB with an adapter to convert it to DP to be used on the RTX 3070, and the other monitor is connected by HDMI directly.

Any advices If I should upgrade one, both, none or what I can get away with?

Thank you

Solution
Yes I only game on 1 monitor so if the other monitor is worse that's fine, I usually game on one and have Discord open on the other one etc.

Is there anything worth it from here you think? https://pcandparts.com/monitor/ I kinda don't wanna go for like a $400 monitor or something.
Well that's a ton of monitors that are out of stock so I can't see their prices :/.

I'd say replace the monitor that's worse out of the two you have right now. And there's a few fundamental differences between monitors. For 1080p I'd recommend 24" for 1440p 27" and above. For 4K 32" and above.

Theres 3 panels. TN, VA, IPS.

TN - really fast, preferred for esports. Not so great colors, really bad viewing angles, not so great contrast / not that...

Are you planning to game on them simultaneously? If you're not then it doesn't matter if you only upgrade one. Many streamers have one powerful gaming monitor that does high refresh and one slower monitor for chat and stuff like that.

I'm not sure if "old" = worse performance on monitors, but I don't think that should happen, don't take my word for it lol.

If you're gaming I'd definitely recommend a high refresh 1080p monitor. Or 1440p/4K 60hz. Really you can just go as high as you want lol if you're fine with lower settings. Especially with that 3070. I mainly play csgo and gta etc I don't care much for high res, so idbuy 240hz for myself. But if you want a balance, 1440p 144hz is great for that card

TN - really fast, preferred for esports. Not so great colors, really bad viewing angles, not so great contrast / not that deep blacks

IPS - much better colors. Fast but not as fast as TN. much better viewing angles, deeper than TN blacks.

VA - colors not as great as IPS, but deepest blacks out of the 3. Also the slowest of the bunch. Viewing angles at par with IPS.

For esports and fast paced fps type games I'd recommend TN

for multi use I'd say IPS.

I never usually recommend VAs, but if you like high contrast VA is good

I remember few models off the top of my head
1080p 144 TN - LG 24GL650F
1080p 144 IPS - AOC 24G2
1080p 240 TN - BenQ XL2546K
1080p 240 IPS - Asus VG259QM
1440p 144 IPS - Asus VG27AQ

I've contacted them asking for the cheapest 144Hz monitors available and their prices (AS you mentioned not all prices were updated)
Here's what they got:

  1. https://pcandparts.com/aoc-g2460pf-24/ - $188
  2. https://pcandparts.com/samsung-c27fg73fqm-27-curved-1ms-144hz-gaming/ - $275
  3. https://pcandparts.com/monitor/lg-24gl600f-b-24/ - $209
  4. https://pcandparts.com/monitor/samsung-c24fg73fqm-24-curved-1ms-144hz-gaming/ - $215 ( HDMI Cable Included)
Edit: I'd go with 1080P 144Hz as best option for me I guess, but I realized some of these cheap monitors provide AMD FreeSync and not Nvidia Gsync, is missing out on GSYNC a bad thing?

Should I also try to go for a GSYNC Monitor or do I not need that at all? (Their cheapest GSYNC Monitors are around $500 or so.. probably a bad idea)

For 1080p I would cross out the last one instantly. 27" too stretched.

The rest is one Samsung VA and two TNs. I know the LG has good reviews. But it doesn't have a height adjustable stand. The 24GL650F does. See if you can get that variation. You'll have to check individual monitor reviews for more in depth info.

BTW, newer freesync monitors tend to work better with G sync. So try getting something that was released 2019 or later
I sort of unfortunately have to go with that store as it's pretty much the best (brand+price wise) where I live.

That 24GL600F seems to be released in 2019 with a lot of positive reviews, looking it up it seems like it can also support GSYNC (few people made youtube videos about it) so I guess I'm going with that one! 1080p, 144hz, 24", Gsync available, cheap should be all good right? :D

Yes. It's supposed to be one of the better looking TN panels as well. So while you won't have excellent color, you won't have horrible color either
