Can my PC run Fallout 4?

Hey, back at January I upgraded my PC a little but it still isn't too great. I am considering buying Fallout 4 but I do not know if I can run it to my satisfaction. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon X4 750k @4.20GHz,
4GB DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance RAM,
Nvidia GeForce 315.

My GPU is very poor and I don't have much ram, but anything around 20-25fps I am okay with. I run GTAV at around 20fps lowest possible settings except from resolution, Assassin's Creed III at around 25-30fps on 'normal' settings (poorly optimized game), and Fallout 3 & New Vegas at a just about locked 60fps on medium settings. I am looking for specific, detailed answers. Thanks for your help

CPU: Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz/AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz or equivalent

Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or equivalent
Free Disk Space: 30 GB

and even if it does, it will be more or less pain in the a** :-/

if you force me to provide a guess - if it runs and i think it will reject to do so - it might be ~ 15-20 fps depending on settings...

i would suggest you go for the cheapest GTX750ti you can find, in case of a case a regular 750 should do - i would normally recommend to go for 950 but it's most likely above 130 $ :-/

but all of them have the advantage to just work with additional power cable, so it should not kill your PSU 😉

lets see - GT315 ~ 158 GFlops - this is what you have...
GTX750 comes around with ~ 1 TFlop which still is still 3 times faster compared to current intel iGPU...

so your GT315 does not even deserve the name GPU (anymore) 😉 you will be happy!!!

Oh wow, thanks. This is really helpful, I knew my GPU was very poor for gaming but I never thought it was that bad. So with a 750ti my PC could possibly achieve 30fps/higher on the likes of Fallout 4 and GTAV?

I owned the same Athlon CPU back in early 2014 with a GTX 650 and it struggled with Fallout 3, Skyrim and even Dishonoured. All of that was at 1080p.

I now have a Intel Haswell Quad Core i5 4460 3.2GHZ with an MSI GTX 970 4GB and my GPU can handle the game graphically but its the CPU that seems to struggle in Fallout 4's main city areas and when there are a ton of enemies on the screen.

The thing is people with i7's are having this problems, some people think it may have something to do with how they haven't upgraded the game engine so the engine is the limiting factor. So basically Bethesda need to patch a lot of performance problems but they don't see to be recognizing the issues event thou it is all over the web the issues the game has.

Hey. It's strange that you struggled on Fallout 3, I run it at a constant 60fps medium settings with a bad graphics card and a few fallout.ini tweaks. And yeah... Bethesda is mainly great for optimization but they sort of leave their games behind afterwards, which is a huge problem with games like Fallout 3 because it is an amazing game and people shouldn't have trouble trying to make it run. It isn't nearly as bad as Ubisoft optimizing the Assassin's Creed games though. what sort of framerates did you get and what settings?

Well actually I found out when I tried to max Fallout 3 with my GTX 650 that my frames dropped only when I looked at lots of stuff in the distance and the same went for outside.
I made a save point where I was getting 45fps then when I got the GTX 970 I loaded it up the game and was a clean 60fps, I was even able to use DSR x4 native resolution so the game looked very crisp.

But anywhere I played all through it and did every quest and had the proper Fallout 3 experience finally.

My opinion is that Bethesda's optimisation is pretty rubbish it takes them years to fix 50% of the bugs then leaves the rest for the community to fix, I find them rather lazy.

They can be yeah. If you still have the issue, go your fallout.ini file in user/documents/fallout3, open fallout.ini and find bUseThreadedAI = 0 and change it to bUseThreadedAI= 1, add a line below it and paste iNumHWThreads = 2 and save. It fixed all of my issues. And I'm pretty sure you've already changed the compatibility mode. Fallout 3 is one of the worst optimized games on Steam.

Get an GTX 960/70 and then get another 4GB of RAM so you have 8GB altogether as most big games now use more than 5GB of RAM, Fallout 4 certainly does.

Then get a Haswell i5 or Skylake depending on how much cash you have saved. Either will be fine.

I don't really have enough money for a 950 and above. Have you had a 750 ti before?

Ok thanks. Right know I am using 1 of my two ram slots, if I were to use the other with a 4GB would it cause blue screen issues? I've had blue screen issues with RAM in the past

No it should be fine as long as the motherboard in question supports the amount of RAM your installing and it is safer to install the same brand and size RAM to avoid problems.

Ok, thanks for the info. Will my processor going to be ok not to upgrade for a while? It's a 750k, but I'm not sure what the difference is between a 750 and a 860k.

The Athlon series in an old architecture and can not compare to a Haswell or Skylake i5. I had a Athlon II 750K in 2014 and at the end of 2015 I had had enough of it as it was bottlenecking my Sapphire R9 270, which is a mid range card, the CPU couldn't handle what the GPU wanted for Fallout 3's. So the Athlon series isn't going to be able to handle a high end card that is require to play Fallout 4.

So, I bought Fallout 4. Took the whole day to install on my sh*tty plusnet 6 mega bit internet. Everything seemed hopeful, set things to lowest settings and pressed play.. boom, immediate crash. You're certainly right, I've good some upgrading to do.

I've just ordered an i7 myself as my i5 can't handle Witcher 3, looking forward to the improvement.

That answers a question I have. I have an I5 4460 with a GTX 970 and suffer a 10-15 fps drop in some areas, especially the Boston Common/Goodneighbor areas. I was sure it was the GPU though turning down AA/FSA did not help. It seems the problem is my CPU, time to save for that Xeon. Thanks for the info.

Switched to a spare ASUS GT 630. It launched, everything lowest settings. Highest fps 40, average 25-30, lowest around 15. My friend has a spare Nvidia GTX 560 SE that he is offering to sell me for £25, would it be any better?

The GTX 560 is worse than my old GTX 650 so no... its pointless getting that card.

The only components that will be giving you a clean high setting 60fps 1080p would be 8GB RAM, i7 and a GTX 970.

Your just going to have to save up as your system can not handle current or last gen games.
