Can my psu handle a gtx 1070?

I know that 550Ws is good enough for a gtx 1070 but I want to make sure my psu doesn't fry instantly

That depends on what else you got on your computer. But it should cover it unless you have an absurd ammount of hardware inside.

Well I have a i7 6700k with a gtx 980, got a gigabyte Z170 Motherboard or some number close to that, 480 ssd and 1tb hdd
(Also the card is a msi card that looks like it's $40

Nvidia recommends a 500 watt power supply, so your power supply, (Assuming that you don't want to run SLI) will be capable of the 1070.

NVidia recommends a 500 watt power supply just for the bare essentials not much room for headroom be better off with a 700 watt psu if you're planning to add other hardware

The 1070 uses around 170w. 700w would be overkill by a long way.
