Question Can my system handle a RX Vega 56?

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about upgrading from an AMD R9 290 4GB to an AMD RX Vega 56 8GB. I'm not so much asking if the new card will be compatible with my current system - I know it will be - I'm just wondering if everything else will be up to snuff; that I won't be "bottlenecking," if I understand that term correctly.

Here are my current specs:
GPU: AMD R9 290 4GB
CPU: AMD FX 8350 Eight-Core Processor 4.0 GHz
RAM: 8GB (I think I have two 8GB sticks stored away somewhere - I will update if I find them)
PSU: 750w I believe, although it may be 650w. Not lower, and not higher. I will check again when I get a moment; at the time of the writing of this post, I don't have time to crack open my case.

As long as you have a quality 650w (or better) PSU, it should work.

The issue is that your CPU (older AM3+ based system) is going to limit the potential performance of the Vega 56 (bottleneck). Otherwise, it should work fine, just sub-optimally.

The FX system is too slow for the VEGA 56. You need to upgrade to a new Ryzen CORE. Board\CPU\DDR4 Memory.

I see. So what would be the reprucssions of running a Vega 56 with an FX? Will it just run sub-optimally, as COLGeek suggests, or will something more dramatic happen?

Nothing dramatic. Think of your GPU as a high performance engine, if the fuel system (CPU) can't get enough gas to the engine, then it won't produce full power. It will still run, just not to its full potential.

RIGHT on , that is the correct path!
Board \ CPU and DDR4 will be needed in the future.
