Can no longer access HDD in Windows

Hi all,

Recently had my PC lockup which was a result of one of my HDD's seizing up and potentially being RIP for good. I am able to see it in BIOS, yet unable to properly see it in Windows. My PC does boot with the HDD connected, but it takes a much longer amount of time than a standard Raid 0 /w 2 ssd's Windows 8 install should take. Not only that, after I log in, my screen is completely black, and does not restore until I take out the (presumably RIP) HDD.

I have to do some pretty much 'ghetto' stuff to actually attempt CHKDSK, let alone see the HDD in question in Windows; Boot with hdd plugged in, wait about 2 minutes, disconnect, quickly open elevated command prompt, run chkdsk. I was stuck at stage 4 after about 5 hours, and didn't really think it'd progress far so I ended up canceling it.

Do you think I'll be able to access this with a docking bay? I would really like to get this stuff back, and I'm definitely buying a new HDD most probably tomorrow (as well as a docking bay if that helps). Anything else I can try before I lose hope? A decent amount of the data is replaceable, but I would hate to do it either way.

Can you see the drive in Windows disk management? If so, you may need to assign it a drive letter and/or reformat it.

If this has happened suddenly for no reason, then the MBR is probably toast, which more often that not, means the drive is also toast.

Can't see it in Windows at all unless I do aforementioned "ghetto" methods. Similar thing happened about a week ago where my pc locked up and HDD wasn't working properly, yet I was able to do a quick right "check disk for errors" via the properties/tools tab on the HDD in windows.

You could try it in another system or use a dock to see if it is recognised, but it does not sound hopeful for the drive.

Yeah. I'm looking to buy a dock tomorrow and definitely a new HDD regardless the outcome. Hopefully it's not rip ;[

Ran the WD diagnostics overnight and it looks like there are a buttload of bad sectors. I can't really properly access the HDD at all anymore, but I will try using ddrescue via a linux live USB and see how that goes.

Thanks for the responses.
