Question Can old laptop(GT540m) run a 4K monitor at lower resolution(1080p)?

Hi,

This is my first thread so sorry in advance if there is not enough information.

I want to buy new external monitor to use with my laptop. But as I'm buying new powerful laptop soon I want to invest in 4K monitor only.

But for now I have Dell XPS L502x with Nvidia GT540m which supports only QHD(2560x1600) max. So I know it cannot run 4k monitor.

So, my question is..

Is it possible to run 4k monitor but at 1920x1080 resolution using HDMI or MINI DISPLAY ports for now?

The monitor should be able to scale whatever output resolution the GPU provides to full screen, image quality will depend on how good the scaler is and scaling may introduce extra lag.

2560x1600x60Hz is the same bandwidth as 4k30, so you may be able to run 4k30.
