Can only go up to 86Hz through HDMI

So I've got a 1080p@144Hz monitor. It's a used one that I bought from a guy I spoke to online. He even gave me 2 HDMI cables and a DVI cable. Even though it's a great monitor, it doesn't have DisplayPort. So I'm stuck between HDMI 1.4 and DVI.

So I first started by connecting the HDMI cable since it also supports audio. I've heard that HDMI 1.4 supports 1080p up to 120Hz rather than 144Hz, which was fine with me. But since I was only getting up to 60Hz by default, I tried going into NVIDIA control panel and manually adding refresh rates. But the maximum I could go up to was 86Hz. The screen would go black if I went higher.

I asked the guy who sold it to me and he told me to use DVI if I wanted to go higher. When I did, I was able to go up to 144Hz. However, I have crappy speakers. I can use my headphones but there are times when my friends watch me game and they'd like to hear too.

Now gaming at 60fps is fine with me, but more is always better. So here are my questions.

1. Does HDMI 1.4 really let you go up to 1080p@120Hz or did I hear wrong? Is the problem with my cables? (It's happening with both HDMI cables)
2. Should I stick to 60Hz using HDMI or go up to 86Hz? 60Hz is more like a standard so I'm assuming it'll have better support? I've never gone below 90fps while gaming though.
3. The monitor is 3D-ready too. I don't have a 3D kit yet but if I plan to get one in the future, will I be able to play 3D at 60Hz/86Hz? Or does it need to be higher?
