Can only hear sound from a few programs.

Hello, currently I'm using my Turtle Beach Ear Force Z2's, and normal speakers. Earlier I could hear everything just fine, then I came back to my computer and plugged my head set in and couldn't hear anything, then I tried with my speakers, still nothing. I restarted my computer and now I can only hear the test sounds from Realtek HD audio manager. Also I am able to hear sound from Skype. Right now I'm testing random programs for sound.

Just so you don't feel alone, I have the same problem. I can hear Skype just fine through my headset, and no other sounds, no YouTube, no system sounds, no nothing.
I found something checked under "sounds" in the Control Panel that said "Allow this to take over from all others" or something like that, so I deselected that, but that was no help.
I'm trying to take an online course, so I'm using the IPad and a little laptop for it instead. Really annoying!

Well, you have to use the jack that is selected for audio out and if you got the stereo plug in the wrong colour jack then this could cause your problems. Usually it is the green one that allows for stero out, the pink one is for the microphone and the blue one is usually the line in jack. Sometimes the green and blue are swapped in some PC's but not often.

Check the Realtek HD audio Manager for the sound jack options (or whatever audio manager is used).

I had the same problem. The following link is having a software called audio troubleshooter. Download and run the program. It solved mine... good luck.
