I seem to have misplaced my Ring of Surroundings. It is an item i
hold particularly close to heart. My profession is that of a thief,
you see. I recently had it while visiting Balmora after a daring
attempt on my life by an assassin from the Dark Brotherhood. After a
number of conversations i found my way to Imperial capital of Mounhold
in Morrowind. I'm not sure exactly when it was lost but when i made
my way towards the Dark Brotherhood underground stronghold i realized
it was no longer on me! Could the Black Dart Gang have napped it
from me? Perhaps a fellow member of the Thieves Guild? This is
maddening!

Not if you are using only Morrowind. There might be a mod which enables
NPCs to steal from you, though I've never heard of such a mod.
You probably have just put it somewhere you don't remember.
If you can't find it *and* you are playing on a PC, you can get yourself
a second ring by entering
placeatpc ring_surrounding_unique 1,1,1
into the console. This will place the ring directly at your feet.
By the way: Do you know the Amulet of Shadows? It has a much more
powerful chameleon enchanting than the Ring of Surroundings. You can
obtain it on a walk from Gnisis to Khuul by helping a woman who has
lost a ring, too.

This reminds me of something that has happened at odd times from the
beginning of Morrowind. It's to do with some *thing* going missing out
of my inventory while invisible or levitating or both. I will hear that
sound of something like a sword leaving a scabbard, and I immediately
look in my inventory and find somethings gone. Different things each
time and never something that is IN USE. It's a Ghost In The Inventory!
I wonder if anyone else has noticed something like this? Nobody
(visible) anywhere around. Just that metallic sound and some *thing*
will leave my inventory.

I hear that metallic sound quite frequently, although I don't use levitate
or invisibility much. I will have to check my inventory after I hear that
sound! Does the item fall to the ground behind you, or does it just
disappear into thin air?

Speaking of pickpockets, does anyone remember a game called "Adventure" for
the old Atari 2800? You had to wander through mazes, find some keys, kill 3
dragons, and then carry a chalice to a castle or something. There was this
damn little bat that would fly around and constantly steal your stuff.
Always at the most inopportune times. For example, he would grab your sword
right as you were about to kill a dragon! That was the first video game I
ever fell in love with. It totally blew away Pac-Man and Space Invaders and
Asteroids. 🙂

it's just *gone*, nowhere to be found at all. It has been common magic
rings, swords, amulets. An ITEM, not something organic, nor clothing.
I've gone to ground looking for something dropped. Never found
anything. Perhaps it's just the Matrix fixing a glitch in code? I've
been playing Morrowind now for more than two years. I've heard that
sound quite a number of times, perhaps a good dozen. It isn't all that
common, but it's enough to make me notice now and check inventory to see
what left.

When you hear that metallic sound, it means that a charged item has
finished recovering its charges. Since items are sorted by type, and
partially charged items don't stack while fully charged items do, you
may seem to have fewer items in your inventory afterwards. Check your
stack carefully, though, and you'll find you have the same number of
things, just arranged differently.

Thanks for enlightning us about that wierd sound! They should have made the
sound more magical and less metallic..

Wow, is that what it is? I never knew - I used to wonder if somehow the
game had switched weapons on me or dropped something on the ground, but I'd
check and it hadn't. They should have used a different sound. Out of
curiosity, how did you know?

You'll hear different sounds for different enchanted items. It's the
same sound you get when you pick up one of the items, eg an amulet gives
the clothing rustle etc.

Trial and error. I was curious about what caused it, noticed that it
could happen when you were just sitting doing nothing, and spent a while
trying different things until I discovered what it matched up with.

Coooool! Thanks for that info, and it DOES fit as I'd be leaving with
loot after a fight and there would be a couple items recharging :)
That these things suddenly become stackable and thereby make the
inventory appear shortened a bit was just as important a piece of
information. I am now a very happy Morrowind camper with no
reservations to that statement. For now. :) Perhaps another two
years!
