can ping printer, cannot connect

I can ping my networked HP laserjer pro color M451dn, cannot print to it.
Using Win 10, 64 bit (HP desktop)

I tried multiple times using HPs install software.
I find it faulty as, using another forum, found that if I looked and edited the ports, assigned one I changed to the IP address, it would work.
HP software should have done this automatically.

I don't have any experience with the newer HP printers. The old JetDirect adapters allowed you to use a generic TCP/IP printer port from within windows, but my experience with newer printers (Cannon and Brother) has been that you need their software to connect to the printer.

Worse. One needs to invoke one’s inner geek and change what should have been automatic.

I understood that once you changed the IP address manually (ridiculous, I agree) then everything was working ... correct or not?
