Hello. I am planning to make a kvm virtual machine with PCI passthrough of my GPU for graphic intensive tasks. As I do have a single GPU I would have my main linux system running in one monitor from the motherboard and the VM running with my GPU in a different display. I know I have to enable integrated graphics on BIOS for this to work but my main concern is, will it damage my GPU?
I'm asking because when I was younger I plugged a second monitor into the motherboard instead of the GPU and my GTX 770 just died instantly, technician said it was because of a short circuit. I've been investigating about it and couldn't find any post regarding something like what happened to me a few years ago but still don't want to run any risk with my graphics card.
Thanks in advance for the responses, have a beautiful day!

It can be a harrowing experience and has possibly affected you ever since, but generally plugging in a Monitor to a motherboard does not cause any short circuit, especially with modern designs these days, but I do have somewhat of a similar experience way back then.

Back then around early 2000s, Case/chassis designs weren't that modern. I had a GPU attached to...
running a monitor off motherboard shouldn't hurt the gpu in any way as its not involved in the operation. You plugging into motherboard, not gpu.

Its possible the short circuit was a one off as I seen plenty of people that run 2 displays off GPU and one off Motherbaord.

Obviously CPU has to have igpu cores or it won't work

Back then around early 2000s, Case/chassis designs weren't that modern. I had a GPU attached to the motherboard that would make contact with the motherboard's edge. Powering on the unit, it just didn't turn on until I found out that the back plate of the GPU was touching the motherboard. I then spaced it out a bit to make sure it wasn't contact and the computer powered on, working fine.

If you want to err in the side of caution, look at the area inside your case where the motherboard and GPU are at the rear side of your case and make sure that the backplate of the GPU isn't touching with your motherboard. Otherwise, it may be that you need a wider chassis with more allowance. Chassis back then were so tight fit.

Other than that it might just be possible that the monitor socket on your motherboard happened to have some sort of defect in it just by chance.
