Assuming the ram is NOT defective and works fine, could a specific motherboard model have got issues with the default/stock timings and speed of a RAM module?
For unstable, I meant that it will work but it might occasionally crash, and might need timings or voltage fine tuning to get to work at stock speed.

That depends, what is the make and model of your rams and what is the make and model of your motherboard? Might want to also mention the BIOS version you're on at the time of writing. issues with drivers and the OS can also contribute to instability, outside of the BIOS being an old version or that the stick of ram(s) is/are faulty.
