I have an 850m, i7, and 12gigs of ram. I have had no problem with any games. Project Cars runs flawlessly. But I can't for the life of me get this game to play without lag. It did for one second, but then went straight back to lagging. Even on lowest settings and resolution it lags. No idea what to do.

Solution

can u install msi afterburner and monitor cpu and gpu usage also gpu and cpu temp while inGame and report back?
Also u use newest nvidia driver? If I remember correctly 850m is Keppler? My friend have a 770, when he uses newest driver he loses 10fps, he reverted back to 1 or 2 driver before the GTA driver. reports say nvidia fucked something up with drivers from keppler... He uses 347.52 now and...
hey,
the game destroys GPU´s is the problem. Min GPU is a 660ti if I remember correctly, which is quite a lot better than a 850m. I think there is nothing u can do for now, maybe there will be mods in future who will improve performance or patches who improve performance but I doubt it will be enough.
good luck

Skyrim? Ultra?
My GTX970 is struggling with Skyrim on high, 1920x1200 with T.A.Z ENB plus several other high-res texture mods.
I am guessing that your Skyrim is relative Mod-free from the graphic point of view.
GTX660 is not strong enough anymore for new demanding games.

man he have laptop, 850m + i7

Skyrim, in my opinion, is a completely different beast to the Witcher 3.
Your GPU isn't great and from the "M" you're probably playing on a Laptop.
I ran skyrim on a steady 30+ FPS on my laptop with i3-3217u 1.8GHZ, 4GB RAM and integrated graphics.

Yes it's a laptop, since I'm moving to England for a year, I couldn't build a desktop this time around. The problem is I've seen multiple videos claiming to the running the game using this gpu. I've had it run smoothly for a good minute before it started lagging again. And I have around 40 mods on Skyrim. It's slightly frustrating...

I guess u read the nvidia guide for witcher3 and have all the settings setup right, don t forget to change from boarderless windowed to fullscreen in settings, it gave me a 5fps boost.
good luck

Like RobertWhite pointed out Skyrim came out about 4 years ago. Yes it was impressive at the time but computer graphics have progressed quite a bit in those 4 years. Just look at the recommended system requirements on Steam if you want some proof. They aren't even close to similar.

Skyrim
http://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/
Processor: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
Memory: 4GB System RAM
Video Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM (Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon 4890 or higher)

Witcher 3
http://store.steampowered.com/app/292030/
OS: 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
Processor: Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3.4 GHz / AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770 / AMD GPU Radeon R9 290

guys forget about the recommended system requirements, the game is out. I checked what he said, the game should run for him on low in 1080p with 30fps +.
Also he said he run the game fine for a minute, than the lag came. Something is wrong with his system, there is a problem which needs to be solved so he can play the game. Go help him, posting system requiremnts doesn t help, they are inacurate the best to say.

I don't know how to help him. His system is below the minimum requirements, meaning that the game is not designed to work on his system. He was the one that posted the comparison to Skyrim so it was helpful to see the different hardware required for those two games.

It may be possible to play it but even the benchmark you posted said it's not possible to play at 30fps at 1080p. It lists it at 20 in their benchmark and if that is an average he would experience dips down into the single digits.

Now, according to that website it looks like he should be able to get playable performance if he sets the resolution to 1024x768 and runs low settings. No way to know if that is accurate without actually trying it though.

Thanks for replies. I'll monitor gpu and cpu usages and get back to you. Sadly something has gone wrong in all of my fiddleing and now project cars doesn't run cleanly anymore. Not sure what to do, I'll try installing an older driver and see where it takes me on both fronts.

Ok, I have it running on low/medium settings at 1366x768. I removed and installed the older graphics version which could have been causing it not to work even at such low settings before. I've definitely played prettier games given the low settings I have to play it at, but I'm just glad I didn't completely waste my money. It still blows my mind how much better Skyrim looks on this machine, but I'm sure that's because I don't understand the underlying processes and just see the finished product.

I have Project Cars running smoothly again as well. One issue with these drivers is that they do not allow any overclocking. This is a little upsetting considering you can greatly boost the performance of the 850m with just some slight tweaking to clock speeds.

it says 20 fps 1080p with HIGH settings, low med should bring him over 30fps. In youtube multiple persons claim to reach this.
Yes there was a fail from nvidia so u can t OC laptop gpu´s anymore, just wait for next driver and test it, hopefully it gets fixed, but for now at least u can play.
