Can samsung migration software clone my 850 evo ssd to an hdd?

Solution

The Samsung Magician does not clone anything.
The Samsung Data Migration can clone from a drive, to a Samsung SSD. It will not do it the other way.

If you want to clone something, these steps exactly:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive...

The Samsung SSD has not been purchased yet. Essentially I'm trying to figure out if this could be a free solution to clone a drive as a back up.

Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:

However...why are you cloning from an SSD to an HDD?
Maybe you're trying to fix the wrong problem.

If you want a backup solution, there are other, better ways to do that.
We can go into some detail if you wish.

I've already explained why...

I'm looking to make an identical backup that can be swapped in the event that I need it.

Either way, you've already answered the question. Apparently the Samsung Data Migration software only works one way.

I was looking for a simple solution that came with the new SSD that I will be purchasing. I've had nothing but issues with Macrium Reflect in the past. I'll stick with Aomei Backupper.

Thanks.
