Hi everyone!

I've been recently offered to buy a brand new Seagate Surveillance 4TB HDD (ST4000VX000) at a great price but unsure if it can be used as a back-up drive for my home PC. Looking at the specs, they are almost identical to Seagate Desktop HDD.15 (ST4000DM000) which I was going to buy initially, but I'm a bit concerned about all the "surveillance specific" features.

My other drive is 2TB Seagate which I'll continue to use as my main drive, so this one will be just for storing some old stuff and general back-up (so I'm not concerned about read/write speeds).

Is anyone here using (or have used) ST4000VX000 as their Desktop HDD (or backup drive)? And will I encounter any issues/problems by doing so?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there ml285,

In my view, you should have no issues using the drive as a back up one at all. Due to its surveillance specific features, the drive should be a better choice than an ordinary drive when used for surveillance recording. Though, this does not mean that you can't use it in your system as a back up drive.

It may be a good idea to wait for some more responses as well. :)

Thank you D_Know_WD! Personally, I can't find any proof that Surveillance (or NAS drives in general) cannot be used as back-up disks (I believe it's not wise to use them as your main HDD due to slow read/write speeds, but I'll be using it for storing/archiving some old files that get accessed maybe once or twice a month). Plus the price I was offered for the Surveillance disk is really sweet :) So unless there are some important points that I completely missed which prohibit (or limit) its use for general backup, I think I'll go with it.
