Can socket 939 run Win 7

Hi,

My current setup includes a AMD 64 3700+ San Diego 2.2ghz processor, 2 GB OCZ ram, eVGA 8800GTS 320MB and an Asus A8N-SLi prem mobo,

Would my system be capable of running Windows 7 x64? Or would I need to downgrade to Windows 7 x86?

I have both XP and Windows 7 on the same motherboard and everything's fine.

In a lot of ways there's nothing wrong with XP so be sure of your reasons for upgrading. XP is no longer supported which means certain security upgrades and other things.

I would definitely get the OEM version of Windows 7 x64. You could also dual boot but I haven't been back to XP since switching.

You may wish to add 1gb or 2GB if possible. Make sure it's the same type and latencies (7-7-7-24 or whatever you have).

Your processor is an Athlon 64, the 64 means 64-bit, so yes you can use the 64-bit version of windows.

That is strange as I am trying to install Win7 but the system hangs during installation. And from the ASUS website socket 939 is not a supported motherboard. See

Vici, what motherboard is it? I have an ASUS A8NE and it works just fine and it's Socket 939. I went to the nVidia website to get the correct motherboard drivers (nForce4 Ultra).

My setup is:

ASUS A8NE motherboard socket 939, nForce4 Ultra chipset
Using onboard sound and network
AMD X2 4200+
4 gigs PC3200 RAM
ATI HD3870 PCIe w/512 MB GDDR4 RAM

System runs pretty smoothly and games work just fine under it.

I can run the following with high if not maxed out graphics:

RE5, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins, Bioshock, Stalker, Assassin's Creed

I looked up drivers for my motherboard (ASUS A8N SLi Premium NFORCE 4 SLI AMD) and in the legacy section on NVIDIA's website I could only find them for Vista 64 bit. See (http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_vista64_15.23.html).

Will these work for windows 7 64 bit with socket 939? Is there somewhere else that I should look to download Nforce 4 15.23 drivers specifically for windows 7 64 bit?



Also, does anyone else use a Creative XFI Xtreme music or Audigy 2 zs with their nforce 4 AMD motherboard? If so do you know whether the motherboard will damage the sound card? I was reading this: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NForce4) please look under "FLAWS" it states issues with Creative XFI and audigy sound cards.

I have heard random crack/popping sounds many times during gaming (through speakers / headphones) and wonder if my xfi xtreme music could have been damaged over the past 4 years?

HV Dynamo I noticed your sig states you have an Audigy - have you experienced the random static/popping while gaming too?

Yes, that's what I used. In the future, if you can't find Windows 7 drivers, then use the Vista drivers as the fall back. If you can't find Vista drivers, then you're probably out of luck if the manufacturer doesn't supply any type of drivers for Windows 7 or Vista.

Why would you run W7 OS on an old PC when you can build a better one for as little as $800.00? What's the point? Run XP till 2014 and THEN change everything.

My AMD 939 with an 3800X2 will stay XP till it dies. No reason to slow it down and aggravate the heck out of me.

I haven't had a problem with Windows 7 on my AMD 939 X2 4200+. Games still run great, including things like Oblivion, Resident Evil 5, Batman Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, etc.

Now, you don't necessarily have to go to Windows 7 yet, but as long as you have the right amount of memory depending on which version you want to run (32-bit vs. 64-bit), I guess it's all up to the user.

There is no point in taking your system to windows 7, I will tell you why. Its not that it wont run it, It runs it perfectly, Better then XP if you add 2 more gigs of memory, There problem is your Nforce 4 chipset. When vista came out everyone who had an Nforce 4 chipset and a PCI or PCIe Xfi sound card got crackling and popping sounds. Nvidia released finally an update that solved this issue, After blaming sound blaster for a long time. Now with windows 7 this issue is back. you can find it posted all over the web. However this time it seems to be worse and Nvidea will no longer update there Nforce 4 drivers. I for one will try to avoid Nvideo chipsets from here on out.

I am running windows 7 Pro (with mostly stock windows drivers) on my Nforce 4 with no problems, other than I lost my boot-up raid support!

I have a Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe, with a Watercooled AMD FX-60 (Clocked @3.2gig), 2 gigs Hyperx ddr533, 2 nvidia XFX 9600xxx in sli, and a "Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty PCI" Sound Card...

I haven't had any problems with popping with this PCI card (Non PCI-Express Version) while running the current Creative 32bit windows 7 drivers, and I don't see any sign of Instability when clocked up too, as others have reported...

Possibly it is more apparent in the XFi PCI-Express version, but mine is working fine?

Foot Note: If anyone has nForce4/Windows 7 "F6" Boot Disk Files For 32 bit, I would be most interested!!!
(I deeply desire raid0 for my velociraptors again🙂

My system has a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.19 Ghz processor and is using a Asus a8v-vm se motherboard. Now it runs with windows 7 on it but there are some problems, every now and then it will blue screen and i think this is for 2 reasons, firstly asus make no drivers that support the socket939 series for windows 7 and this is similar for many of there other hardware, i am currently making do with either foreign drivers or with the vista drivers. Secondly i think Ram is an issue I have got only 1gb at the moment and i think upgrading this will solve the problem, or at least make it run faster. The main problem you will have bios wise except the blue screen is each time you log on you have to reinstall drivers but it doesn't take long to do. So apart from that the answer is yes it can, but there will be some problems and as long as that doesn't bother you too much it is fine.
