Can someone please explain to me something?

I am thinking about upgrading my rig and am debating between doing a new build or just upgrading my GPU. So my question is I currently have an i5 3470 I have heard that the i5 6600k is where it is at right now for a gaming PC, which is what I need. However when I went to cpuboss.com to see exactly how much better it was it was the 6600k is only .5 better. Does it not take into account the OC capability of the 6600k?

Is the 6600k a substantial upgrade? or should I just slap a new GPU in and wait a year or so?

Thank you all for the help.

Just grab a new gpu and wait, the 6600k is more powerfull than your 3470 but not really worth the upgrade for gaming, only on cpu bound games the 6600k would be better otherwise the difference would be 5-6 fps.

only 5-6 fps really??? damn. In that case I will just grab a 1070 and a new monitor. the CPU upgrade doesnt seem worth it at all if thats true.

It depends on the game. Here's some bench's done on a handful of games with fps differences between the 6600k and 3570k along with the 6600k oc'd to 4.5ghz. Some games take advantage of the oc like witcher 3, crysis 3, gta v, far cry 4. Witcher got a 16.4fps improvement over the 3570k, oc'd it gets a 25fps improvement over the 3570k. In other games like ac unity it only got about 6fps difference. That's paired with a gtx titan x at 1080p ultra settings, so depending on gpu, resolution and so on it will vary some.

Depending what gpu you currently have it still might be better to hold onto the 3470 and upgrade to a gtx 1070. Skylake will mean a new cpu, motherboard, ddr4 ram and a reinstall of windows as well as an aftermarket cooler if looking at the 6600k. Neither skylake k series cpu's (i5 or i7) come with a stock cooler so aftermarket is necessary not optional.
