So I'm trying to make sure that this mobo is compatible wit this cpu, the mobo says it supports am3+ cpus but the fx series isn't under the supported cpus also, I've been told I need a vrm cooler on my mainboard and I have no idea what that is.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but I'll be using the computer for gaming

That motherboard does list support for the FX-6300:

As for the VRM (Voltage Module Regulators), these are the square things between the CPU socket and the back panel, an after market CPU cooler (big enough) would be a solution, not that it's a must, but AMD stock coolers aren't really good so it would be good to invest on it while having it also cooling the VRMs.

so this cpu, this motherboard and say a hyper 212 evo aftermarket cooler would be fine for a gaming rig?

yeah, assuming you have a good GPU it should be a good system (though gaming being the priority you might wanna consider an Ivy / haswell i3 instead, extra cores don't benefit gaming as much as clock efficiency which right now intel is better at it).

Could you reccomend a good intel processor for about the same price?

hmm the i3-4130 should be better at most games within the same price range (130$ on newegg).

Having said that, for that price range it seems to me the FX-6300 is an overall better choice (since slowly more and more games are taking advantage of 4 cores), so unless you can stretch your budget for an i5 cpu (for a more powerful and durable solution) stay with the FX-6300.
