Can someone please help me? Moving saved games to new pc.

I just finished building a new windows 7 rig. My old pc is still running XP. How dow I go about moving my player profile, saved games, etc from my old pc to the new one?

For example, I installed COD MW2 on my new pc. I assume that all I need to do is copy the player folder from my old pc to the new one. For some reason I can't find the damn COD MW2 on the windows 7 rig. This is my first time using windows 7 so please go easy on me. lol

I would assume the games themselves would have some way to do that. Do you have any documentation for them?

It really shouldn't be difficult. All that I think is required is copying the player folder from one pc to the other. The player folder stores all saved games, user controls, etc.

For some reason I can't find the program folder on Windows 7. All I can find is the game. When I click on it the game starts. Windows Xp is much easier. You just open the program folder, selec the game and find the player folder. I am missing something obvious. Maybe its because I am so tired. lol

Windows 7 doesn't generally allow per-user configuration information in the program folder because it doesn't allow unprivileged users to make changes in the program folder (this helps to prevent your programs from being infected by viruses).

Per-user configuration is usually stored in a subfolder under C:\Users\username\Appdata folder. This folder is hidden and you won't be able to see it unless you change the Explorer settings to show hidden folders.

sminlal is correct, but some games have odd places that they store saves so if you don't find a folder where he has directed you you'll find your answer with google.

is this in the 'game' folder off the start menu, in which case this is just a short cut for games, c:\program files\xxx\game name\ will get you to the real installation folder. and inside your profile\saved games or inside my documents there might be other saved files, depends on the age of the game and how well integrated the game is into windows.

Ok. Let me try to better explain myself.

On my current XP system I click my computer. I then click the main drive. I then click program files. Then the activision folder. Then the COD 4 modern warfare folder. In there is a players folder.

I assumed all I had to do was save that folder to a usb stick and install over the folder on my new pc. For some reason I can't find that folder on the windows 7 rig.

I am sure this is easy for you windows 7 experienced users. I never even tried Vista so this is all new to me.

Well as I said Windows 7 doesn't allow that stuff to be placed in the C:\Program Files folder tree. It will normally be located somewhere in the hidden C:\Users\username\AppData folder tree. Have you tried looking there on the Windows 7 system?

I will right now. Thanks sminlal. I am surprised they changed that in Windows 7. I am sure I am going to find lots of things that surprise me.

Ok. I just did what you said but there is no AppData folder under my username. I am the only user.

I assume that means I need to open the "hidden folder" option somewhere in windows 7. This is just stupid or maybe I am. I consider myself to be above the curve but this is really confusing me.

In an Explorer window, you need to:

- click the "Organize" button on the top toolbar and select "Folder and Search Options"

- click the "View" tab

- scroll down to the "Hidden files and folders" section and click on the "Show hidden, files, folders and drives" choice.

Most programs store their settings in the "Roaming" subfolder under "AppData".

You can also start the game and create a save game. This will ensure that the game now has a profile/player directory. Then do as sminlal said and look for the "players" folder under Appdata. Once you find it, you can just overwrite that folder with the one you copied onto your usb drive.

I have a suggestion, i have tried it in my pc in far cry 2 game in another way. It perfectly works in nfs also , i am not sure about call of duty any way try these steps.
1.copy the games folder(ie. The name of the game egs: EA games in nfs, my games in far cry) in My document to pendrive or any drive.
2.install the game on your new pc.
3.open my documents of your new pc or windows 7.
4.delete the folder which is named as your game(egs ea games).
5.copy ea games(game you copied to pendrive) from pendrive to my documents.

I am so sorry but I am just not getting it. Can someone please walk me through every step to find the "hidden" Appdata folder. I have followed the above instructions but that folder is not there. I am so sorry for my ignorance with windows 7.

I finally figured out how to show hidden folders. I now see the Appdata folder but there is no CODMW2 folder there. This is so ridiculous. Am I really this stupid? God I hope that is not the case. Why is this so easy on XP but not on 7?

You may need to go to a COD forum where there are more people familiar with the game and where it stores stuff on Windows 7...
