Hi guys. I'm planing on upgrading from my athlon II X3 450 to a FX-8350 piledriver. Now, my motherboard has a 970 chipset and some ppl tell me that it works only on 990 chipsets. And if i have to update or flash the BIOS then forget it, gonna sell the board and cpu and get an i5 and a board for it

Solution
It will work with the 970 chipset and it should work on your mobo WITH a BIOS update, its easier than selling the board and CPU and then getting an i5.

Yeah... my board and graphics card are both high heat producers. My radeon 6850 idles at 42C and when gaming goes above 65C but not over 70C. All i need now is a piledriver which will generate a lot of heat and i'll have a perfect heater to keep me warm through the entire winter :D

Hahah, I've actually been using my phenom build (125 watt CPU) as a heater in the early mornings by running Prime 95. Anyways if you want to help cool the case consider a PCI slot exhaust fan.

Which one do you have? Mine is an unlocked athlon II 450 but is now a phenom II X4 B50 with the 4th core and level 3 cache unlocked

I did not do any unlocking since mine came as a quad core by default. I try not to take chances with those CPUs that have the *potential* to have another core unlocked. It's kind of a hit and miss. Anyways I have a Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition overclocked to 4.0 ghz.

That's a 95W CPU at stock speeds but since you OC'ed it, its now a 125W CPU. But which GPU have you got and how does it perform in games?

Actually the black edition of pretty much all phenoms are 125 watts by stock. Anyways I got a Asus HD 7770 for my video card, and no its not overclocked. So far at my resolution of 1600x900 it maxes out all the games I throw at it. For instance, Skyrim and all the Need for Speed games so far. This is my CPU:

NO. the 970 chipset does not work with the 8350. I recently upgraded to FX8350 with a gigabite 970 mobo. The system was constantly hanging. Even with the latest bios update and all the latest drivers. When I switched to MSI 990FXA, everything was back to normal! Thank God I came accross one post on the internet that someone got emailed from gigabites support and they told them that 970 chipset doesn't support the FX8350.
