Hi,

I have this external hard drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3TB1HF4771&cm_re=seagate_expansion-_-22-178-115-_-Product

And i would like to hang it on the wall.

First, will that bother the hard drive to mount it vertically?

It does not have a wall mount option on the back. So i am also looking for a wall mount holder. The only thing i have found so far even close is this..

But its not for sale its just a invention idea that someone made but i cant find it for sale anywhere. They call it a "external hard drive holder".

Any ideas where to find one?

I will drill some holes in it for ventalation.

thanks :)

I think it's a great idea to mount an external drive so it can't fall over because that's probably how most of them break. But instead of drilling ventilation holes in a solid plastic basket it would probably be better to use a wall-mounted wire mesh basket like a magazine holder. That drive is small enough that you may want to look for a wire brochure holder--most of those just hook onto two drilled holes in the wall or perfboard.
There is no problem mounting a mechanical HDD at any angle, and usually you want to mount an external enclosure in a way that allows hot air to flow up straight through the vents. That enclosure looks terrible however as there are only vents on one side, and drilling holes would void the warranty so it would make a lot more sense to buy your own external enclosure and internal drives for it.

If it's out of warranty however, drill away! I would just drill keyholes on the wall side to hook onto mounting bolts.

Thanks BFG, i love the basket idea, but i had some of these door hangers laying around so i cut off one end and made a hanger for it and then fabed a metal bracket to hold it level to the wall.

Worked out great... Now i can have the top of my new box with top fans clear. Thanks all for the help.

My next project will be forming some black leggings to use as intake fan filters. Ill have to go to the dollar store and see if i can find something with a plastic frame i can use as a fan frame for the filter.

Don't mount it upside down, though (on its back). That's bad for a mechanical drive.

Not according to every drive manufacturer. There are many OEM Dell, Lenovo, HP cases that mount mechanical HDD exactly this way from the factory, and if it had any detectable effect on lifespan they would've changed it.

HDD have had Fluid Dynamic Bearings since 2001 and you would expect (as with case fans) FDB to last longer if not mounted horizontally because of the small thrust bearing surface when starting and stopping, but this does not appear to be the case for HDD. FDB case fans do come in magnet-suspended versions rated for far longer (4-5x) life as the thrust bearing is kept from touching on startup by the magnet, so perhaps HDD manufacturers have always used something like this or more robust thrust bearings. After all most aftermarket computer cases mount the HDD horizontally.
