Can u recover files with many subdirectories?

I have a WD My Book 1140 External Hard Drive that I use to back up all my data on 3 laptops then which without any rhyme nor reason suddenly the external hard drive cannot be accessed and asks permission to be formatted. I tried using Recuva software and it read the Files and Folders to be intact but I cannot recover any files and folders that are 7 subdirectories deep. Am stumped. Any help is appreciated
