From a "best card for ya money" standpoint, ATI has lotsa cards "better" than the 5xxx series. This article here has the 4xxx series kicking butt as far as winning "best card for the money" categories go and nVidia took as many categories as the 5xxx did:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,2464.html

For example, at $155 (single card) and $310 (twin cards), the 5770 finishes in a tie with the 4870 and nVidia 260. My suggestion would be to look at an article like the one above, pick your price range and focus on that section of the article.

The standout right now of course is the 5970 as it has taken the top dog crown but at its $625+ price tag, the fact that your thinking AMD over Intel has me thinking you have a more stringent budget in mind.

Not sure what your basing the "SLI get 3 or 4 times better" on as I am not seeing those differences between XFire and SLI but to get where you seem to want to go, I'd suggest:

Twin 5770's and One GTX 260 using the technique here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-ATI-physx-patch-gpu,8786.html?xtmc=play_nice_ati_physx&xtcr=1

That should cost you about the same amount as a GTX 295 though the 295 would give better performance.

I'd advise against going with ATI for your GPU and Nvidia for your PhysX. Nvidia has already made it known that they intend to break/disable that functionality. You may spend the life of your system playing cat and mouse with Nvidia as they remove that feature and you have to wait for some hacker/cracker to re-enable the functionality. Too much hassle if you ask me!

Yes it is, but you said "You can't SLI on an AMD board", assuming you can only use SLI with intel boards.

The motherboard I gave a link to can use SLI and is an AMD board.
