Can we insert a x16 graphics card into a x8 slot ?

Yes you can and there will be no ill effects.

the 5450 is a very low power card that could easily be run on X4 pcie slot with no ill effects. I just want to clarify that card is in no way a gaming card but as far as media playback and htpc use goes it's pretty good.

As performance improves for each graphic card, the price of the card increases. There are no gaming cards "at the price" of the HD5450. Look towards the HD6670 / HD7750 / GTX 650 as a minimum price point for gaming cards.

As for what graphics card slot you have, as 4745454b stated, an actual PCI-Ex8 slot is very rare on consumer level motherboards. If you have a PCI-Ex16 slot rated for x8 (often annotated as PCI-Ex16 (x8), that would work fine.

Without knowing the exact model of your motherboard or your old graphics card, there is nothing we can do. Perhaps if you could take a picture of your current graphics card and your motherboard, we may be able to determine what you need and what you can do.

AGP slots and PCI-E slots are completely incompatible. You cannot install a PCI-E graphics card into an AGP slot. However, since we don't know what you have, we cannot say for sure what your alternatives are.

The FX5200 was an AGP/PCI card. The PCIe version was called the FX5300 and was SUPER rare. It's nice you say he means something, but he wrote 8x slot. While there are 8x PCIe slots, as I mentioned above they aren't common. What is common is what he wrote. He has an "8x" slot/card, and its currently running an FX5200. This means we are talking AGP here, not PCIe. While true we won't know for sure until he posts a motherboard, I find it far more likely that he has AGP over some odd PCIe slot.

I actually had/have (it doesn't work) pcie 5200 fx it came oem with a dell (canada) or this soldered biostar board when they used to offer "business solutions" but i see your point

If the slot was the wrong size despite not being knowledgeable I am sure the op is able to guage the length of a slot by looking at it, Hes asking for help not unable to see.

We are all making assumptions only mine makes the most sense without further information while I do appreciate you practicing your psychic abilities while chastising me for making a basic assumption the op is able notice the size of the slot or be even the least bit aware of the information he is dealing with.

As for the 8x pcie 5200fx which never existed at all ever at any time I would say that is a shite side more rare than a pcie x16 times fx5200
lets all practice logic together

Well surprise, surprise, they actually made all three versions, PCI, AGP, and PCI-E. For some reason, the PCI-E version wasn't listed on GPU Review, but I found one here.

@spentshells - While your faith in the knowledge of the OP is refreshing, I'm afraid I don't share it. When you hear of people cutting off the pins of a PCI-Ex16 card to make it fit in a PCI-Ex1 slot and then wonder why the card doesn't work, I don't put ANYTHING past anyone.

Bottom line, until the OP returns with the information we've requested, nothing will be resolved.
