can windows 8 work on toshiba laptop

It should, though I don't know why you would put it on a laptop of that age.

I put W8 on my dad's older laptop which had VISTA and his laptop worked a lot better.

The only drivers I ended up needing were:
a) Video - got from NVidia's main site not laptop site (often need laptop site's drivers but not if fresh OS not modified by the laptop manufacturer)

b) Media card reader - used the Vista ones instead from laptop site and they worked (wasn't obvious what the problem was first as Device Manager just showed an "unrecognized" device)

Other:
- I'd add Start8 for Windows 8
- if you have W7 I'd wait and get W10 in a few months as it will be a free upgrade
