Can windows auto updates cause startup issues?

Okay my computer was staring up normal would run for a few minutes then either freeze or restart. I was having issues like this about a week ago with my video card drivers but finally fixed that by uninstalling them and then using a utility cleaner to erase any lingering parts that may have remained then reinstalling original CD drivers. Of course I shut down the softwares auto update feature. I hadn't installed or done anything drastic to change the computers settings. So I quickly did a system restore before it could freeze up and noticed that a "Critical Update" was performed last night after I shut it down. I restored it to before that point and everything is fine now. So basically I wanna know


Can windows automatic updates cause problems with startup or just in general?

if windows update or other software update is enable then start-up take some times for searching updates.
