Can XP and DOS work this way?

I'm interested in using the remote access feature of XP Pro to use my work
'puter from home.

The program I MUST use is an old DOS CAM program for printed circuit mfg. I
have done an experimental instalation, but when I try to run it, I get:

Phar Lap err 74: can't use -REALBREAK under this version of DPMI

Will my idea even work, or am I out of luck?

You might be OOL on this one since your DOS app doesn't seem to like
the virtual environment. Can you change any video settings in this
app to see if that can help?

I was going to suggest compatibility mode, but this reference:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q121962

states that this app simply isn't going to work on any version of windows
past Win98.

Here's what might work for you, if you really need this program to work:
Buy and install Virtual PC (or a competitor) This should allow you to
install a simple DOS Virtual Machine which would run this app just fine,
under XP, and, perhaps (not certain about this)--accessable via Remote
Desktop.

This is all over my head, but I gotta ask...is DPMI 1.0 something that can
be "plugged in" or "upgraded" to XP, or is it really just a non-modifiable
part of the OS?

DPMI was "DOS Protected Mode Memory Interface" or something like that. It
was a DOS extender to enable applications to take advantage of memory above
1MB in a controlled way.

Windows offers the DPMI interface to support downlevel DOS programs, but it
does not support the features that your PharLap extender wants to use. You
can't change Windows to offer these services.
