can you bypass the bios ram limit on a Toshiba P50t-A?

I have a Toshiba P50t-A that has 12 gb memory in two cards, one 8gb and one 4 gb. I bought an exact same part number 8 gb Hynix card and installed it. However, the laptop won't power up. Power light blinks and then goes back off. I suspect it is limited in the bios. Is there any way around this to increase the memory to 16 gb? Thanks
