Can you change an Onboard video card to a discrete video card

I was wondering if I could use a discrete video card when I have an Onboard video card already? If so can you tell me how or link me somewhere that can tell me how?

Yes you can install your own choice of graphics card provided the motherboard has a compatible slot (usually PCI Express these days).

I fitted one to my build, easy peasy.
