Well, depends on what your goal with the build is. If we are talking gaming, the R9-290 build is one that stands out for performance, but has a poor power supply.

My understanding with AMD FX series is that their memory controllers aren't that good when it comes to the high speed DDR3. So I don';t think the 2400Mhz memory is a good idea. (Actually out of spec for that board: DDR3-1066 / 1333 / 1600 / 1866 / 2000 )

The Intel build would be efficient and adequate for games, but you are sacrificing a lot of the budget on the CPU. An i5 would allow for a better GPU to match. Not a very good power supply here either.

My vote would be for build 3, but without the most expensive R9-280, but rather one of the cheaper R9-290.

So much for the myth that Intel is SO much more expensive.

I like the build but the mobo worries me a little bit. Are you sure that it's good? Also, will the Radeon gpu work well with the intel cpu?

Hey thanks for all that. I ended up going with this build:
FX 9590
Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler
16 GB G skills ripjaws
R9 270x (which I will upgrade soon)
Seasonic 620 W PSU
Corsair 500R case with a few extra fans
Asus m5a99fx mobo

And here are a few upgrades I added along the way:
Audigy FX sound card.
NZXT Sentry 3 fan controller
Arctic dual gpu cooler
Razer deathstalker expert
Some nice speakers/subwoofer
Hopefully soon a new gpu :)

Well the problem is that I was having trouble accessing the tom's hardware forums for some time and once I did access them I only had a few days to make my choice. At that point I had had some discussions with other people who presented other facts etc. So you did help me but so did a lot of people and my decision was not made only based on one post.

Which by the way worked out quite well, as I got a pretty powerful CPU, nice PSU, ok GPU, and good everything else :) and also the 270x, if overclocked properly and all that can run today's most demanding games at some nice resolutions, ACU on medium-high (have not actually tried ultra), tomb raider on ultra, etc... SO I am quite happy with it. What I may do in the future is buy a bigger PSU and then get a second 270x. What do you think about that?
