Last december i got a new build with a single 280x in it, and now i want to upgrade. Thing is i would rather run a crossfire setup to make use of the still capable gpu i have. i remember hearing that the r9 series cards could run in crossfire with each other i.e an r9 280x could be paired with an r9 290x. so now im thinking of getting an r9 290 to pair with my 280x but before i spend the money i want to make sure that this is actually true or if it was just referring to being able to crossfire the 280x with the 7970

Solution
You are not able to Crossfire the R9 280X with the R9 290.

However the R9 280X is compatible with the Radeon 7970.

if what im reading about crossfire right now is true then this is because the 290/290x is a different architecture but if i was going to try crossfiring with a 270x (not going to just an example) it would work because they are both GCN architecture correct?
