if the ati radeon 9600 pro is rated as a DX 9 card, then why is it:

vertex shader 1.1
pixel shader 1.4

instead of:

vertex shader 2.0,
pixel shader 2.0

??

just because dx8 does provide technically same named effects, it does not mean they look as good in quality. bumpmapping can be done in tons of different ways, and there are huge quality differences between doing it in dx8 and dx9 for example.
same for others

oh, and they forgot about the hdr-features.. why aren't they listed?

yes i have..hence my question...

in 3dmark2001 se test..it gives the shader version numbers i mentioned.

in the article...that == DX 8

for DX 9 they are supposed to be version 2.

and looking at the ati specs again... it says smartshader 2.0

but then i notice smartshader 2.1 that says shaders can be up to 65 000 instructions long blah blah (that sounds like shader ver 2)

if you ask me, ATI has some misleading info.

my card can't be a true DX9 part, as claimed by ati.

EDIT: ok i am confused this review says the 9600 DOES have the version 2 shaders:

http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/ati_radeon_9600_pro_review/page17.asp

"DX9: The majority of titles on the market are still DX7 and DX8 -- we have yet to see a shipping game that takes advantage of the 2.0 pixel and vertex shaders supported by the RADEON 9600 PRO, or the 128-bit floating point pipeline. So with its DX9 feature set, end users will get a long lifetime out of their RADEON 9600 PRO card if they so desire"

Is the card directly from ATI or is it a third party vendor?

nm. i just downloaded the latest 3dmark o3 test..and it correctly identifies that i do have ver 2.0 shaders.

it was not correctly detected in 3dmark 2001 SE.

ok..everyone can breathe easy again..i'm sure you felt my horror.

apologies from me to ATI :)

now, on with the show.

Thanks for the good information. I finally preordered a copy of HL2 along with Halo for the PC. I can't wait...

Thanks Genetic Weapon, now I can let the "will HL2 run with decent settings on a GF4" posts R.I.P. I'm glad I'll get to experience everything at full texture resolution, and most of the eyecandy is there. From what the article says, it will look best on DX9 cards (of course) and should look great on DX8 cards, run fine on DX7 cards wiht lower to mediumish settings, & whether it will run on each individual DX6 hardware is questionable, but should run ok @ 640x480 "higher-end" DX6 hardware.

Looks like Crashman can play on his TNT2 afterall!!

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

redstart lol!!

i mean, its not 1.4 and 1.1 , its fully 2.0PS and 2.0VS

hhaha

dont worry your confused.. teh 9600pro is FULLY dx9 compliant

EDIT: ok i am confused this review says the 9600 DOES have the version 2 shaders:

http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/ati_radeon_9600_pro_review/page17.asp

shartshader 2.1 is higher than Direct9, techinically. ATI went the extra step to beat Nvidias "DX9+" claim . so the 9800pro is really "DX9++", because of the extra shader length and shadew buffer

Ahhh it's a good thing I was sleeping for all THAT.

Pfft!

BTW Redstar PS 1.1 1.3 and 1.4 are subsets of PS 2.0, that may have been what confused you. 3Dmk2001SE is useless for that.

Anywhoo, makes me laugh. What no DX9. News to me. ;~)

I thought it was DX9~#!&++++/--++.

Oh well to err is human, to really FVCK things up requires your girlfriend using your computer!
