My friend has a laptop using Windows 8.1, so she can download Windows 10 for free as an update. Is it possible to somehow download it onto a USB flash drive and put it onto my computer? I am not using Windows, I am using Ubuntu. I know that we can't both have it, she doesn't care.

Solution

No.
You would need a Win 10 license for your PC. Her "Windows 10 for free" only exists as an Upgrade to her current OS.
It is not a whole separate OS license.

Well... the problem is not with the installation of windows. You would have absoltely 0 problem installing windows from a usb flash drive to your computer (just skip all the activation steps). Everything will be working perfectly fine, but the problem will be the activation. If you want, you can try windows 10 for 30 days (i think?) until something happens and you need to enter a license. I've personally never had windows 10 installed without a license for more than 2 days so i can't tell what will happen then. I assume some features will be blocked... But you can buy pretty cheap license keys on internet. Here is an example.
