It's not just covering up some pins, 771 and 775 have some of their pins in different places and the stickers "swap" those locations on the bottom of the CPU. You still need a modded BIOS with support for the Xeon.

I doubt this would work in a Mac. I certainly would not try unless I was okay with the possibility of losing the old Mac Pro altogether.

No socket 771 Xeons have 12 cores from my memory, I believe the max is 4 cores. Only the newer Macs can get the Xeon mods for 6 or 12 cores.

What cpu do you have currently? you could likely install this:

It's a 4c/4t 2.6ghz CPU that should work in lga775 without modification. Its about the newest cpu that will work, being launched in 09.
