Can you guys recommend LCD display calibration software?

I know about Displaymate, but it's $70!Is there anything similar as an alternative, preferably free, or at least a bit more affordable ???

And one more thing... Is it OK to adjust settings like brightness/color/gamma through my video card? Will this definitely not damage my LCD in any way?? Thanks!

If my math is correct, I do believe $300 is more than $70, which is more than what the OP wants to spend.
