Are you able to visit both universities? Go there, walk around, talk to students - especially those in the Computer Engineering curriculum.

Your question is valid but too narrow. What other courses are offered, what other minors?

You will need other skills: writing, communications, speaking, some management, even some budgeting and finance. To succeed in IT you must have a broader set of skills beyond just the "geeky guy in the basement". Look for classes that will supplement your goals and requirements. And those goals and requirements will change. Do not take a narrow, limited path.

Who is on the faculty: what skills, experience, and education do they have? What have they published and done? No problem with mainly academic backgrounds and experience per se. It is just that instructors/faculty who are active in the field can often offer more to their students.

How long has the Computer Engineering program been offered? What size are the classes? Are there working laboratories with up-to-date technology? Are there opportunities for internships? Does the university help with job placement?

The source of the degree itself is relevant but may not carry that much weight with potential employers.

A serious student with B's and C's in difficult classes/majors may be more acceptable to a potential employer versus an all A's student with easy classes.

Take a close look at the class listings for both universities. Compare what is being taught and to what level of difficulty and detail.

And do remember to consider all related costs: tuition, room & board, fees, etc...

University is an experience that benefits you based on the work and effort you put into it.

And that work and effort is what potential employers are looking for. Not the fancy logo on the degree.
