Can you install a wireless Ethernet adapter to override a mobo with built in wifi

My boss has a Dell inspiron and the Wi-Fi card on bff he motherboard has burned out, I just want to make sure that if we order a wireless network adapter and install it into the pci-e that we can set it as the primary over the built in wireless card

Well if its burnt out its not working, the system will recognise the PCIe card. You may find in the bios there is the option to turn off the onboard wifi. Simply put, yes, it will be fine, you can always disable the on board card in device manager anyway.
