Need to install Linux for projects on my Lenovo laptop with preinstalled Windows 8. Is there a way to do this or does Windows 8 block this at root level?

Solution
Yes, download the latest version you want and burn it to a dvd. Boot the computer to the dvd and try the install. If you encounter problems note the error and post in on the linux board and we'll sort it out with you.

Often the install is perfectly straight forward but occasionally the manufacturer makes it a little complicated but doable.

You can always de-activate safeboot and run linux from a DVD or flash drive too and of course VMware is an option as well.

Yep it is really easy! I'm on my HP laptop right now with only linux. It was a very simple proccess. First of all, you want to make a bootable usb or dvd to instert into your computer. When it it is starting you want to open the bios with usually DEL or F12 on Lenovo laptops and set boot priority to usb first. After you just follow the setup where you can choose to either dual-boot or replace the whole harddrive. Make sure you back up the files you want to keep before starting. Good luck and I'm glad you are joining the linux familly!

I understand you want to get Linux installed as a dual booting Operating System. But I will suggest a better option ... a VirtualBox... I had tried installing it on a hyper V too but it gave me some problems.... On virtualBox it is really easy to configure and use kali linux.... if you need a tutorial on how to do it ... you can visit http://www.knotrick.com/preparing-hacker-pc-installing-kali-linux-on-virtualbox/
