So my new card is a Evga gtx 1080 hybrid. it has a 8 pin port for power on it. it comes with a pcie cable to plug into it. but can i just plug a 6+2 vga cable into the 8 pin port instead?
You can plug a 6+2 pcie cable from your psu, instead of a single 8 pin pcie. Not sure about vga cable you're referring to, unless you just meant the pcie cable from your psu.

Susquehannock :
VGA is not same thing. 6+2 PCIe are made to be clipped together to act as 8-pin if needed.
ok well my vga cable plug into the back of the pcie bable that is provided by the graphics card but will have 2 pins hanging out of it. is that ok.

Do you mean this molex to pcie adaptor? You don't have pcie cables coming directly from your psu? What psu do you have?
You don't need to use the cables that are included in the box if you are trying to connect 2 of your 6 pins to the cable that will then equal one 8 pin. If you are doing that and you mean it has 2 left over pins hanging to the side of each one, then you already have a 6+2 which is the same as am 8 pin pcie and just combine it and plug that directly into your graphics card.
